I have analysed the idea of 'creating a synergous brand identity' through researching two artists. As I know it is continuosly used in the music industry, my aim is to become familiar with this idea so I will have a clear understanding when developing my own 'branded identity' in my music video.
ARTIST: BEYONCE KNOWLES
ALBUM COVER NAME: 4
I have defined the main key features of "4" album cover to be:
Colour palette consists of cream, black, gold, yellow & brown
The theme is enhanced to be raunchy, royal and exotic
Artist's name and album title is in Bold black font which adds prominence
Costume of the artist, a black fur gilet with no other clothing (revealing/x-rated) also
gold accessories are seen on one of her arms, this is perhaps symbolic of what we are going
to expect to see the artist wear throughout her music videos or posters.
MUSIC VIDEO 1: RUN THE WORLD
I have defined the main key features of "Run the world" music video to be:
Similar colour palette as the album cover as we see the video consist of blacks, golds, yellows & browns.
Repetitive theme of exotic, royal and raunchy (deserted)
The artist is also seen at 0:51 in a similar costume as the album cover, black fur gilet as well as wearing gold accessories throughout the video. We also see the exact same hairstyle (blonde, gold wavy hair) Which could indicate that this is the artist's signature style.
However, in terms of portrayal comparing with the album cover which is presented as fairly simple, the video seems to be very busy and active which gives the audience a different perspective of the artist.
MUSIC VIDEO 2: 1+1
I have defined the main key features of "1+1" music video to be:
A repeated colour palette but mainly consisting of blacks, golds & yellows
Theme of exotic is seen throughout which links very well with the album cover and previous music video.
We also see the artist barely clothed throughout, which also shows a connection between the previous video and album cover. As well as her mainly being captured as a MCU in the video allowing the audience to identify who she is and what is her signature image. (Blonde/gold coloured, wavy hair).
Beyonce's 1+1 music video, portrays the simplistic/ feminine perspective which wasn't portrayed in "Run the world" music video but is clearly seen in the album cover.
In a conclusion, my analysation of Beyonce's album "4" clearly shows a good link through the album cover and two music videos, "Run the world" and "1+1" as was able to identify four main elements that were featured across all 3 products which created her brand identity.
I have defined the 4 main key features across all the media products to be:
- Repitition of colours (blacks, golds, yellows and browns)
- Artists signature style (same hairstyle and similar clothing clearly identified in the run the world music video compared with the album cover)
- Theme of exotic/raunchy is portrayed throughout
- Main focus is always on the artist across all the products, this is seen in a vast amount of close ups and medium close ups.
