Carol Vernallis states that establishing shots are one of the key camera features of a music video and are used frequently in a music video with the inclusion of close-up shots. The style of framing of the video is quite distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics.Vernallis believes in the artist breaking the 4th wall and incorporating jump cuts and slow motion when editing. Carol Vernallis believes that a video may break conventions of continuity editing and that the editing becomes visible. The audience would clearly be able to establish the editing. Our group will apply Vernallis' theory to our music video. However, we could not apply it to our tutorial video due to the lack of time we had filming and editing. One of the reasons for the lack of time was the fact that it took the artist performing some time to get composed and film as the artist was out of their comfort zone, which is understandable. Hopefully in our final project, the artist will be more comfortable performing in front of the camera and in front of the other members of the group.
Regarding base tracks, due to the lack of time we were unable to get as many as we would have hoped for, we only filmed in one location and with one shot type. Hopefully in our final project, we will be aiming for at least 4 base tracks.
We used Final Cut Pro to edit our lip sync tutorial. We used markers which helped us cut in time to the beat in and get the lip syncing in time with the lyrics efficiently and effectively.
Overall, I believe this preliminary task went well for our group. The only downside is the fact that the artist felt uncomfortable singing and performing in front of the group and camera, which is understandable as we have never done a project like this before so it was something completely different. There was probably more pressure on the artist as well due to the fact we had very little time, I believe in the final project we can make a really successful and professional music video.
