Pitch: Social media (by Lashay Brown)
It was required create a twitter, instagram & facebook account as a form of promotion for our artist (Gizem K) and to keep track of our progress whilst we are filming our music video.
We also thought it would be very useful way to connect to the audiences of our chosen genre so we can get an idea of what conventions they would expect to see.

Pitch- Digi Pack Gizem's Blog
Digi Pack Poster & Album
This is the digi pack I have produced for the music video, I was inspired by our synergy (the tattoo) which led me to produce this album & poster. The poster and the album should be related I believe so this is why I have the same theme going on in all of my productions.

Kane's blog: post production
We will use Final Cut Pro to edit our music video. Our video will feature the use of:
Base tracks will be used to give the video structure. The shots will move in time with the beat, not only will this be done during filming but also during editing where we may have to increase the speed of the shot in post production to fit the music video.
In post production, we may incorporate visual transitions to make the music video more entertaining for the audience so they remember the artist and the song more effectively.
- Jump cuts
- Slow motion
- Transitions

Reflection Blog
So far I'm comfortable and dedicated for my A2 year, studying media. I'm doing well, trying my best to keep up with all the blogging tasks as during the A2 year, blogging is a great way to track my learning and understanding of the tasks we are set. Blogging is also extremely important for tracking my progress and for my teachers, they are able to make suggestions and comment on what I need to do to improve.
Therefore now, I will need to focus on further blogging and learn the lyrics for my Lip Syncing role. Although memorising lyrics will be hard, I'm keen to do well so I will present my very best potential and be successful at our Music Promotional Package. The amount of researching I have been doing has strengthened my opinion on the fact that our chosen Katy B song will be the best as it also isn't hard to lip sync, so I believe we have made the right choice.

Analysis Of Other Music Videos That Has Influenced Me
My main personal influences came from many artists such as; Rita Ora, Jess Glynne, Ellie Goulding, Charlie XCX and Katy B although Katy B was one of my group member's choice. These Artists are a mixture of Dubstep and Hip-Pop music and this is because myself and my group did not know which genre to choose.
Rita Ora was my biggest inspiration for many reasons including; style, genre, brand image etc. Her style is an inspirational aspect because she dresses very casual but classy, sexy at the same time so, I will take this influence and apply it to my music video as well. I love how she presents her signature red lipstick for sexy and classy purposes. The song is one of my best songs in general and that's why I was genuinely inspired by this music video. I thought that we could perhaps film in similar locations but I have made up my mind to the fact that this is a well known music video and I certainly wouldn't want people thinking that we tried to 'copy'. For these purposes, we have decided that we shouldn't go with this video.
Because we decided not to do the hip-hop genre, we decided to take inspirations from the Dub-step genre and Jess Glynne was one of our inspirations. My whole group had a look at the music video and examined it. My group believed we should rule this video out of our list because again, this is a popular video amongst the Dub Step fans and that we needed a music video that we could not 'copy' in any way. In this music video, parks and open green areas are mainly used to film which was the reason why it inspired my thinking that we could do the same, but this was obviously wrong because our videos would have been likely to look similar. We also decided that her deep voice wouldn't suit my appearance in any way.
Ellie Goulding was also an inspiration however, we had to instantly remove her from our potential song list as we didn't agree that her childish voice will unfortunately not suit me despite the fact that she's a well known artist. Another reason why we decided not to do Goulding is because the locations of the music video are hard to find such as; the camping, fire scene although we could have not used the same locations anyway. This isn't the most suitable video to film.
We finally made up our minds and decided that Katy B is the best artist to be inspired by. She is known but she isn't as known as the other artists. Especially this video will be the best to work with because the main locations used are locations like clubs and stage where she's in her own concert, performing. This video will differ from our video significantly through the locations, clothing (she wears casual clothing, we will switch it up by dressing classy and girly), hairstyles and make-up.
Before deciding on the Katy B song, I wanted my group to think about this song by Charlie XCX because the story behind it was amazing and inspirational. Throughout the song, we had seen a story of a blind woman and a man etc. But then we realised that this video would not be suitable, we should choose some thing much more suitable in terms of popularity and difficulty and so that's why we picked Katy B On A Mission.
Pitch- Core Audience Gizem's blog
The main audience for our music video is mainly 14+ - 20 however ages above 20-28 is considered as a wider choice of audience range. The main aspects that will appeal primarily to teens are the choice of style (our artist's choice of clothing must be stylish- skater dresses, heels, colourful lipstick, playful hair could be be used to support this.) Teens as we are aware, seem to be interested in stylish, girly dresses and skirts as well as glamorous make-up etc. (pink lipstick presents a girly appearance whereas a red lipstick is much more classy and 'sexy'.

.jpg)
We have thought deeply about how we could appeal to our core audience. We've also thought about how we could appeal to the wider audience range (adults). The way we could effectively appeal to adults specifically 20-28 year old people is that, we could use props like headphones, interesting - dark but flashy light locations perhaps to get a 'party experience' or include scenes of people performing for example in Oxford Street to entertain audience and make our video appear professional and well thought about. We could use trainers and high heels, red lipstick as it connotes a 'classy, sexy view' to appeal to both core and wider audience as well.

Pitch- Brand Image Gizem's Blog
Katy B
In this picture, Katy B reminds me of Rita Ora because Rita Ora is known for her signature red lip and she appears to wear a Red lipstick with pale skin just like Rita.
In terms of Katy's music genre, she's comparable to Jess Glynne and Delilah as they both work with the Dub-Step genre. Jess Glynne however, most suits Katy B also because they have the same colour hair, both produce Dub-Step music etc. They many things in common.
Because Katy B and the similar Dub-Step genre artists wear very casual, sporty outfits, to make a change and to stand out but particularly to reflect on the male gaze Mulvey's theory, we are going to make our artist wear more girly and stylish outfits but remembering to deliver to our main audience which is 14 +. Skater dresses, skirts, trainers and heels, curly hairstyles will be our main focus with Pink Liptstick to engage with our audience but also remembering to expand our audience to suit the second audience range which is adults. We will be focusing on the Male Gaze, following Carol Vernallis's theory and apply it onto our music video, not in a very exposed way but, we want the male gaze theory to be evident.
Pitch Final Song Choice Gizem's Blog
Our chosen song is On A Mission by Katy B.
Although this track does have a music video, our music video will significantly differ from it. Through; Mis-en-scene- props, costumes, make-up, hair. Camera-work, Editing, Setting and locations.
This video will differ from our real music video firstly because it's set on stage where she's singing to her fans and to achieve the same result, it is impossible to find a location like this. For this reason, we decided to choose this song to produce an independent music video. Consequently, our locations will be places like; Underground, London Bridge, an open park area, Oxford Street.
Katy B uses is the stage throughout the music video and a car where she's seen in various times. In terms of props, she doesn't use anything but a microphone and the DJ set playing in the background in a concert whilst performing.
I regards to the use of Camera and Editing, the video contains many uses of cut away shots, Close ups, Mid shots, Long shots especially to capture fans in concert) Slow motions, blurred shots and many others. We will try and include as many types of shots and editing as we can in our music video as well because this is key, it isn't about 'copying' at this stage. Though, we will attempt to be unique and use these in our own ways.
Overall, we have chosen this video believing that this is the most suitable artist and music video to suit myself (Gizem Lip syncing). We have looked at other artist as well but the issue with them was, either their music video was popular and we didn't want to necessarily appear as we tried to 'copy' the video, or the artist's voice didn't suit.

Katy B
Song: What Love Is Made Of
The Album cover is kept very simple and clear.
-Font, the blue filter is evident with a large white font "On A Mission" which looks very simple.
- Clothing, she is wearing a casual clothing. Black vest top with jeans which is unsophisticated however I believe that she truly does present the Dub Step genre as the genre is very playful yet relaxed, mainly street clothing is apparent.
- Location, is seen in London City as she's British as well.
Music Single
-Clothing, is kept very simple again so we can tell that the album cover and music single video does connect with each other. We can also see the jeans she wears throughout the video as well as the same hair style in different bas-tracks.
-Props, although the audience cannot see any props on the album cover, we can see in the video that she has headphones, hats etc. We can also tell that although she was solo in her album cover, there are a lot of other actors within the music video seen mainly in a house, partying.
-Locations, there are many different base tracks used within this music video. One of the locations are at home with other people partying, having fun and the other location is at the car racing area where cars are seen also.
-Props, these are used simply and effectively used to suit the Dub Step genre. Cars are used to go with the rhythmic speed of the music track, the headphones and hats are used to suit the genre as well because these are connotations of 'street style'. We see multiple dancers for visual pleasure and this is mainly something to expect in other Dub Step genres.
Overall, the album cover does relate to the music single video costume wise, as she is dressed very causally in the video as well. There is isn't however a strong link with the album cover though and this is because there is no sorts of filter used like on the album itself.
Pitch: Setting and Location (by Lashay Brown)
Presented in the slideshow is all the locations that my group & I plan to use in our music video.
We have selected the above locations because we feel ALL will be very relevant to the concept and genre of our song. The portrayal our artist is to be youthful, exciting and fresh which is why most of our locations will be filmed in the City of London specifically at night to show our artist being adventurous and enjoying the 'nightlife'.

The portrayal our artist is to be youthful, exciting and fresh which is why most of our locations will be filmed in the City of London specifically at night to show our artist being adventurous and enjoying the 'nightlife'.
As the majority of our music video will be filmed in Central/ City of London (such as Piccadilly Circus, Leceister Square, London Bridge, Barbican Museum, City Road Basin) this means that we will have to consider any restrictions or permissions that we may have to ask.
We also have to consider WHEN we are going to film each location so we can avoid any disruptions.
Our aim is to express the vibrancy of the song through the locations and editing which is why we have chosen to film in Piccadilly Circus, Leceister Square and Roundwood funfair during the night time so we can capture our artist performing around the bright, vivid lights.
We aim to use these shots during the chorus' of the song as the tempo appears to be fast-paced.
Whereas for the slower parts of the song such as verses and the bridge, we will film in not so busy locations such as London Bridge, City Road Basin and Barbican museum to reflect the change in the beat.

Pitch: DRAFT- Filming locations (by Lashay Brown)
We are aware that locations such as: Northampton square, London bridge and Kensal green station may require permission however we are in the process of finding a resolution for these issues through research and commitment to a planning schedule of what part of the video is going to be filmed where and when.
Our aim is to be optimistic and hopefully we will be able to film in the locations we originally planned.
Below are images of Locations 2 & 5 (Barbican museum) showing the exact location of where we intend to film.
LOCATION 2: OUTDOOR SECTION OF THE BARBICAN MUSEUM
LOCATION 5: CAR PARK OF THE BARBICAN MUSEUM
Overall, we have chosen the majority of our locations to be exterior due to our genre, Dubstep being classed as urban and we want to portray that through the artist's image as well as the locations and settings.
This is to help the audience to identify that our music video is apart of the Dubstep genre and also are satisfied with the conventions of what they would usually see from artists such as Katy B.
Skills Audit
Since AS last year, I have made significant process through using different types of apps and technology. At the start of my AS year, I did not know about the different types of ways to present Such as; Prezi, Slideshare, Animoto, Powtoon, Emaze, Timetoast etc. However, now I am able to identify various different use of technologies and use them on my Blog. In A2 I blog frequently which makes me much more familiar with using Blogger and uploading images, embedding, uploading videos. Whereas last year in AS, I didn't know how to embed videos from YouTube on to my blog and I found it very hard to figure out but at last, I am able to embed any video, images onto my blog.
Another thing I've become familiar is researching. When we started looking for ideas for our Filming project, we didn't do enough in depth researching for example about; clothing, locations etc. However, in A2 I realised that I take this issue into account a lot more and really believe that, knowing and researching the simplest things could perhaps make a huge difference. Not knowing where to film isn't a great situation. To make sure for my A2 Music promotional package task, I will ensure that myself and my group are prepared and everything else is broadly planned so that we can be successful and earn a good grade.
Although being in front of the camera over all isn't a confident experience, I will try my best and make sure that my group and myself is successful. Close Up shots for instance, could be used on other locations or objects, a close-up could be spinning around so that I feel confident as well as performing my full potential. However, filming last year made me confident and realise that being in front of the camera isn't as bad and embarrassing. I hope to do well and get a good grade indeed.

Research: Synergy activity (Artist 2)
The second artist I have decided to analyse relates to Dubstep, which is the genre my group & I have chosen for when we create our own music video.
In terms of 'brand identity', I have closely observed Ellie Goulding's album cover 'Lights' alongside two of her music videos and personally feel there is a fairly good link between the 3 products.
MUSIC VIDEO 2: LIGHTS
I have defined the main key features of 'Lights' music video to be:
Repitition of colours, as we saw in the previous 2 products. However specifically centered around blacks, whites & silvers
Apart of the sci-fi theme is repeated, but presented as majorly bold with more colours included (which slightly differed from the previous two)
We see the main performer with the same hairstyle as the album cover throughout
Ellie Gouldings 'Lights' music video shows more complexity in comparion to 'Starry eyed' and the album cover.
This shows to the audience that the artist wanted to take a different outlook from what we see on the album cover.
In terms of 'brand identity', I have closely observed Ellie Goulding's album cover 'Lights' alongside two of her music videos and personally feel there is a fairly good link between the 3 products.
ARTIST: ELLIE GOULDING
ALBUM COVER NAME: LIGHTS
I have defined the main key features of 'Lights' album cover to be:
Main colours used are black, white, gold, brown, silver & peach
The theme is seen to symbolise the galaxy/ out of space (sci-fi) also can be represented as surrealistic
The artist is seen as centre of attention which helps the audience to fully identify her image (Angelic/ fairy like)
The bold 'glowing' font of the artist's/album cover name compliments the glittered theme
MUSIC VIDEO 1: STARRY EYED
I have defined the main key features of 'Starry eyed' music video to be:
Repeated colour palette, particularly of blacks, golds, browns, silvers & whites
Theme of galaxy/sparkly with a sci-fi perspective is seen in the video, strongly reflecting what we see on the album cover
Vast amount of close-ups show the artist's signiture style (blonde wavy hair & natural make up)
Obvious edits and special effects in the video also reflect the editing on the album cover.
In relation to how 'Starry Eyed' is portrayed, in comparison to the album cover there is a very strong link as there is a clear identification that the song of the video was clearly apart of 'Lights' album through the use of similar theme & colours.

Ellie Gouldings 'Lights' music video shows more complexity in comparion to 'Starry eyed' and the album cover.
This shows to the audience that the artist wanted to take a different outlook from what we see on the album cover.
In a conclusion, my analysation of Ellie Goulding's album "Lights" clearly shows a good link through the album cover and two music videos, "Starry Eyed" and "Lights" as I was able to identify four main elements that were featured across all 3 products which created her brand identity.
I have defined 3 main key features across all the media products:
- A repitition colours mainly consisting of: blacks, golds, silvers & whites
- Theme of galaxy/ sci-fi, however this was portrayed slightly different in 'Lights' music video
- Artists' signature look of blonde wavy hair, stayed the same throughout all 3 products

Research: Synergy activity (Artist 1)
Synergy is simply defined as "working together". To be more specific, Synergy is when two companies work alongside each other (e.g. a soundtrack may appear in a film) however both still remain seperate.
I have analysed the idea of 'creating a synergous brand identity' through researching two artists. As I know it is continuosly used in the music industry, my aim is to become familiar with this idea so I will have a clear understanding when developing my own 'branded identity' in my music video.
MUSIC VIDEO 2: 1+1
I have defined the main key features of "1+1" music video to be:
A repeated colour palette but mainly consisting of blacks, golds & yellows
In a conclusion, my analysation of Beyonce's album "4" clearly shows a good link through the album cover and two music videos, "Run the world" and "1+1" as was able to identify four main elements that were featured across all 3 products which created her brand identity.

ARTIST: BEYONCE KNOWLES
ALBUM COVER NAME: 4
I have defined the main key features of "4" album cover to be:
Colour palette consists of cream, black, gold, yellow & brown
The theme is enhanced to be raunchy, royal and exotic
Artist's name and album title is in Bold black font which adds prominence
Costume of the artist, a black fur gilet with no other clothing (revealing/x-rated) also
gold accessories are seen on one of her arms, this is perhaps symbolic of what we are going
to expect to see the artist wear throughout her music videos or posters.
MUSIC VIDEO 1: RUN THE WORLD
I have defined the main key features of "Run the world" music video to be:
Similar colour palette as the album cover as we see the video consist of blacks, golds, yellows & browns.
Repetitive theme of exotic, royal and raunchy (deserted)
The artist is also seen at 0:51 in a similar costume as the album cover, black fur gilet as well as wearing gold accessories throughout the video. We also see the exact same hairstyle (blonde, gold wavy hair) Which could indicate that this is the artist's signature style.
However, in terms of portrayal comparing with the album cover which is presented as fairly simple, the video seems to be very busy and active which gives the audience a different perspective of the artist.
MUSIC VIDEO 2: 1+1
I have defined the main key features of "1+1" music video to be:
A repeated colour palette but mainly consisting of blacks, golds & yellows
Theme of exotic is seen throughout which links very well with the album cover and previous music video.
We also see the artist barely clothed throughout, which also shows a connection between the previous video and album cover. As well as her mainly being captured as a MCU in the video allowing the audience to identify who she is and what is her signature image. (Blonde/gold coloured, wavy hair).
Beyonce's 1+1 music video, portrays the simplistic/ feminine perspective which wasn't portrayed in "Run the world" music video but is clearly seen in the album cover.
In a conclusion, my analysation of Beyonce's album "4" clearly shows a good link through the album cover and two music videos, "Run the world" and "1+1" as was able to identify four main elements that were featured across all 3 products which created her brand identity.

- Repitition of colours (blacks, golds, yellows and browns)
- Artists signature style (same hairstyle and similar clothing clearly identified in the run the world music video compared with the album cover)
- Theme of exotic/raunchy is portrayed throughout
- Main focus is always on the artist across all the products, this is seen in a vast amount of close ups and medium close ups.
Research: Synergy & Cross Media Convergence
The aim of today's lesson was to become familiar with how synergy and cross media convergence impacts the 'brand identity' of an artist.
Below is evidence of the in-depth research I have produced, specifically looking at how the artist's are branded across their album covers, album teaser trailers and music videos.

Synergy activity: artist #1
Synergy is when two companies work together (an artist may supply the soundtrack for a film) however both still remain separate. A good example of this would be, Adele "Skyfall", which was the main song of the James Bond film of the same name, the song would help give the film a brilliant soundtrack and the film would help bolster Adele's fame. Not even did the song appear in the film but also appeared on Adele's album, thus showing the fact that even though it's mainly for a collaborative outcome, it's still separate. I have analysed the idea of 'creating a synergous brand identity' through researching two artists. My aim is to become familiar with this idea so I will have a clear understanding when developing my own 'branded identity' in my music video.
The video sticks with the same colour scheme of black and white and the suit and ties. In the beginning of the video Both Justin and the featured artist 'Timberland' both are dressed in the similar sophisticated costumes. The location is simple with the black background focused on the light bulb tubes that are continuously flashing which creates the contrast of the black and white colours. As the main song starts, the location changes to an all white background with Justin in a waist coat and tie, without any blazer. As he dances with the performers the shots flicker between black and white backgrounds.
Key Features Seen Across All Products:
The key features that are seen across both the album cover and the video are the simplicity and the fact that nothing much is happening within each of the products. The colour schemes are similar and the costumes are similar which reflect the artist, brand and identity as it is consistent throughout.
Artist: Justin Timberlake
Album: Future sex/Love sounds
The album cover colours consist of black, white, grey and orange. Justin's costume is a suit and tie and he is crushing a disco ball. The title font is the same font as the writing on the back of the cover for the track list, and the colours black, orange and grey are the same. The background colour is white with lighting focused on the artist, so the right side is highlighted. The back cover also has a white background and the picture is of the disco ball reflected. The album cover is quite simple with basic colours and not much going on; this is to keep it sophisticated, classy and mainly to focus on the artist.

Lip sync tutorial evaluation
The most common shots used in a music video are:
Carol Vernallis states that establishing shots are one of the key camera features of a music video and are used frequently in a music video with the inclusion of close-up shots. The style of framing of the video is quite distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics.Vernallis believes in the artist breaking the 4th wall and incorporating jump cuts and slow motion when editing. Carol Vernallis believes that a video may break conventions of continuity editing and that the editing becomes visible. The audience would clearly be able to establish the editing. Our group will apply Vernallis' theory to our music video. However, we could not apply it to our tutorial video due to the lack of time we had filming and editing. One of the reasons for the lack of time was the fact that it took the artist performing some time to get composed and film as the artist was out of their comfort zone, which is understandable. Hopefully in our final project, the artist will be more comfortable performing in front of the camera and in front of the other members of the group.
Regarding base tracks, due to the lack of time we were unable to get as many as we would have hoped for, we only filmed in one location and with one shot type. Hopefully in our final project, we will be aiming for at least 4 base tracks.
We used Final Cut Pro to edit our lip sync tutorial. We used markers which helped us cut in time to the beat in and get the lip syncing in time with the lyrics efficiently and effectively.
Overall, I believe this preliminary task went well for our group. The only downside is the fact that the artist felt uncomfortable singing and performing in front of the group and camera, which is understandable as we have never done a project like this before so it was something completely different. There was probably more pressure on the artist as well due to the fact we had very little time, I believe in the final project we can make a really successful and professional music video.

- Long Shots
- Establishing Shots
Laura Mulvey's theory
The 'male gaze', developed by Laura Mulvey, describes how the audience is put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. Mulvey states that women are objectified in a sexual and seductive way because heterosexual men are in control of the camera; the woman is passive to the active gaze from the man, which indicates to the audience that the man is the dominant character on screen. This theory was originally applied to films, but can also be applied to music videos, which is the form I am applying it too. The main genre that the male gaze is enforced is in Rap/R&B music, the majority of the time the women in the videos have a lack of clothing and may pose seductively and dance erotically.
Dizzee Rascal - Holiday
- All the females featured in the music video are wearing a swimsuit or a bikini, whilst Dizzee Rascal and another performer are dressed in suits.
- There are also elements of tracking shots which tracks a woman from behind from the torso down, this objectifies her in a sexual way as she has no identity and the camera mainly focuses on her bum and leg.
- The women in the music video look happy and as if they're enjoying the way they are presented in the music video. This shows that the women are passive to the active gaze of the man, which signifies that the man is more dominant.
What is the function of a music video?
Despite the fact all music videos are different they all share one purpose and that is to promote their song in order to generate more sales and also the popularity. Another reason artists make music videos is to give the audience visual simulation, the artist may want to portray a view through the illustration of their music video. Artists also make music videos to help the audience remember the song through the use of visuals, a great example of this would be PSY "Gangnam Style", the music video gained so much popularity and became the no. 1 most watched video on YouTube, which therefore gained the song and the artist himself massive popularity.
One Direction - Best Song Ever
One Direction - Best Song Ever
This is an example of a music video that is memorable, and if the audience remember the music video they'll remember and enjoy the song. The group make this video memorable by their choreographed dance routine, just having fun on the set and the group dressing up playing different types of characters in the intro (Zayn playing a female secretary). The group have the dance routine in the video because they know their fan base will learn the dance routine and therefore remember the song because of it, the group having fun on set messing up the office is memorable because it creates a very vibrant mood within the audience which may cause them to remember the song. The group showcase their fan base in the video by including footage from their live concerts which shows they are a very popular boy band. This music video has 282 million views on YouTube so the video clearly appealed to their fan base in an effective way.
Soulja Boy - Crank Dat
This is another example of a music video that is memorable. In my opinion, I believe the song was only remembered because of the music video. Soulja Boy was not known before this music video was released, but after a while of the video being released, he became one of the most popular artists amongst teenagers. What made this music video so popular was the dance routine that correlated with the chorus, the dance was very catchy and made the song and the artist popular globally. This music video has 163 million views on YouTube so the video clearly appealed to the public, and to have that many views for a first single on a debut album is remarkable.
Eminem ft. Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie
This is an example of a music video that uses amplification to give the audience visual stimulation. The song itself is about domestic violence in relationships and the music video reflects the lyrics in the song. Not only does Eminem and Rihanna feature in the music video, who both have massive fan bases, Megan Fox also features in this music video as the lead actress in the music video, which could influence Megan Fox's fans to watch the video because she is in it. This music video illustrates the lyrics brilliantly and is very symbolic to domestic violence which makes it a very good music video. This video has 750 million views on YouTube so the video clearly appealed to their fan bases.
