Andrew Goodwin has 3 main theories of a music video:
1. Structure
2. Role of the artist
3. The way the images connect to the lyircs of the song
In relation to the theories, In order for the audience to connect with the video, Andrew Goodwin's studies must be put into context.
For an example, for the structure of the music video does the artist use a vast amount of repitition of images or shots like a song may repeat the same lyric and beat. The structure can also be seen when the video has a 'closure' at the end by the tempo building to a climax and fading away.
Whereas, the role of the artist may be portrayed as the performer, narrator or observer and can be seen looking directly at the camera addressing the audience and breaking the 4th wall.
Lastly, the way the images connect to the lyrics of the song can be interperated as 'Narrrative Types' in 3 different contexts: Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.
Examples
Disjuncture: Childish Gambino- 3005 (Little connection between what we see and what we hear)
Illustration: Kanye West- All of the Lights (The visual images support the lyrics of the song)
Amplification: Jhene Aiko- The Worst (The visual images support the lyrics of the song and add new layers of meaning)
