Editing: behind the scenes

Reflection of 'editing to the beat'

I found editing to the beat of Katy B 'On A Mission' quite difficult as the genre of the song was dubstep so there was a lot going on in the instrumental. To help me edit to the beat, I counted to 4 and laid a marker on every fourth count to make sure the visuals cut and changed in sync with the beat.

Outline Of Improvements

Points suggested by students,target audience

Mainstream or independent?

What is the difference between an mainstream and independent artist/band?

Mainstream artist/band

- Be owned by a record label (meaning less control over the music they produce as the label would want the artist to produce songs that will sell, also possibly meaning less control over the concept of a music video)

- Produce music that will be featured on TV and radio

- Wider target audience

- Mass amount of budget invested in their music, video, advertisement and merchandise by their record label

Independent artist/band

- Unsigned, if signed, it would be at an independent label that isn't well known and wouldn't have a mass amount of budget to produce and promote their artists

- Have full control over the music they produce as they wouldn't need to meet demands of a major record label

- Linear target audience

- Would not have a large budget, meaning music videos will look visually inferior than an artist who's signed to a major label

Production: Rough Cut

Production: Rough cut feedback

Below is a video of the feedback we received for the roughcut of our music video.
As a group we thought this was very useful and aim to take this into consideration, in order for us to create a successful outcome and fullfill the pleasure of our audience.

Editing- behind the scenes

Editing- behind the scenes

These are some of the pictures taken behind the scenes of the rough cut editing process. So far, editing went well however there is still some things to change and add from the footage. We are planning on adding more footage as the rough cut clip probably isn't going to be long enough yet. We are also going to be cropping out the extra background part of the photography studio scene and improve after the feed back.

Ideas for question 1 of evaluation

Skills development

I have developed my skills in production, specifically in editing, since the project we had to produce for AS.

Filming: re-shooting

Due to a lack of shot types, our group went out during lesson time on Tuesday 18th to capture shots specifically for the first verse again. The group went to the Barbican to re-shoot these shots. This meant we were set back when it came to editing, but we have planned to completely get rid of our original shots for the first verse and use the new shots as in these shots the artist looks more confident and comfortable singing and also the camera movement is a lot more fluid and better.

Response to feedback on the pitch

I received positive feedback from the members of my class as well as my media teacher. The positive feedback was mainly on the thorough detail and presentation of the pitch. However, the critical feedback I got back from my media teacher was that the draft of my digipak did not relate to the synergy which was the tattoo on Gizem's arm. Instead, I used Gizem's eyes as the main focus of the digipak and advertisement which wasn't appropriate.

This was the digipak draft, I am terrible at drawing
so therefore annotated what would be
 present on the album cover.

Filming Summary

Myself and my group have filmed various days in our full potential. There has been times where being in front of the camera was embarrassing and made me feel very uncomfortable. However, as days passed by filming, I started to feel much more comfortable performing in front of the camera which helped develop my lip syncing and my performance in general.

During the half term, we filmed in London Bridge and Piccadilly circus and had so much fun. We filmed in London bridge around 1:00pm to catch the daylight, we also filmed at night In London Bridge as our first location. At night, we stayed at the same location however, we went down stairs to the area with multi coloured, bright lights to make the most out of filming at London Bridge. The area helped us with more footage which was beneficial.

Here is a screenshot of the Pinterest I've made online

The second place we filmed at was Piccadely Circus. It was certainly a great idea to film
there. We captured talented street performers dancing,we also captured great shots of the atmosphere. the view was particularly better at night time when it got darker, the bright lights all around the streets gave us the perfect lighting. This location however was extremely hard to perfom due to the amount of people distracting me and making it hard to film.

We filmed for the second time at City Road Basin. Filming there, near the lake was amazing, we have filmed a couple scenes there where I walked by the water which were successful so we'll definitely be using those scenes in our music video.

The third location
we filmed at was Kensal Green. We decided to film when it got late in the evening so we had darkness. We used our flash when filming in Kensal Green park but didn't need the flash later on in the funfair scenes. The park was a quiet greenery place which was much more convenient. We then moved to the Funfair area and filmed at the arcade and the rest of the rides such as: twister and many more, which was also exciting.

The fourth location we filmed at was the Barbican centre. It was easy to find areas to film in because of the amount of buildings and locations there were. Such as: the tall wall areas, glass windowed area and many more places we found! We used the flash light in rare occasions according to the darkness of the location. We filmed during the morning to catch the bright, natural daylight.

Our final destination had to be the Photography room! The most exciting area we filmed for sure. We used the projector in the Photography studio to ptoject different thenes on to the wall to achieve a 'pop star' look. We successfully managed to represent this within the use of theme and lighting. We decided to film at an high angle shot to caprure what we needed. The whole effect of the projector and my body language really helped portray the dubstep genre effectively.

The Box+ Streaming Chart 4 Music

Ariana Grande Ft Zedd - Break Free

Ariana Grande's latest release of 'Break Free' featuring Zedd has successfully managed to be rated number 16 in The Box+ Streaming Chart with the help from the the rate of her fans!

The genre for this music release is pop as Ariana tends to produce her music specialized in the pop genre, This video however is probably aimed at teenagers again, like her normal music videos.

Her costume change is similar to the costumes she tends to wear in other music videos presented in the picture below. She tends to draw in the male gaze (Mulvey's theory) by wearing rather short dresses and crop tops etc. which connotes that her main target audience is teen girls as they are likely to be drawn into her sense of fashion but also attracting the make gaze through wearing revealing clothing.

Ariana's  music video is most likely to be aimed at teens once again. The use of animatic monsters and graphic scenes of her shooting creates a magical scene. These scenes are used to attract the younger age groups and draw them in to the video.

In terms of synergy, the colours of purple, metalic silver and white is often used in this video which also comes up in the first shot of the music video. We can see the purple, metalic tones and whites in the music video when she's performing quite clearly, especially in her choice of costume. The whites are used in the background colour and the details on her face (stickers). The tones of purples and pinks are used as a graphical background theme as we can see above from the gif image.

The use of camera in this music video is significant. There are many different uses of camera angles, editing, mis en scene and sound used however, I have realised that the use of tracking shots are constantly used to emphasize on the rhythmic beat of the music video as well as different forms of close ups eg. extreme close-up. Ariana appears also to break the 4th wall (relating to the Andrew Goodwin's theory) which makes creates a stronger connection with her fans.

A few Changes to Pitch

I have received positive feedback from the members of my class as well as my media teacher. The positive feedback was mainly on good detail and presentation of the pitch. However, she also mentioned that I change my idea on the digi pack because it didn't really relate to the synergy which was the quote tattoo on my arm instead, I used the eyes and eyebrows to be the main focus which wasn't appropriate.

The second suggestion she made was that I include why I have decided to use classy and girly costumes in my video rather than just going with very casual outfits just like the artists I have mentioned in the Dub Step genre. I have now included this briefly in my 'Brand Image' blog post expanding on why myself and group have decided to use girly outfits regarding the Mulvey's theory on the male gaze.

Reflection On Progress Blog

This was my previous 'refection'
'So far I'm comfortable and dedicated for my A2 year, studying media. I'm doing well, trying my best to keep up with all the blogging tasks as during the A2 year, blogging is a great way to track my learning and understanding of the tasks we are set. Blogging is also extremely important for tracking my progress and for my teachers, they are able to make suggestions and comment on what I need to do to improve.
Therefore now, I will need to focus on further blogging and learn the lyrics for my Lip Syncing role. Although memorising lyrics will be hard, I'm keen to do well so I will present my very best potential and be successful at our Music Promotional Package. The amount of researching I have been doing has strengthened my opinion on the fact that our chosen Katy B song will be the best as it also isn't hard to lip sync, so I believe we have made the right choice.'

Firstly, I strongly agree that I am able to keep up with all the blog posts and cope very well with them. I spend extensive amount of time on my blog posts to make them presentable and also make sure that I include what is meant to be included as well as extra blogs. I enjoy blogging very much although it can be very time consuming at times however, I try my absolute best to present my blogs in an appealing way such as through the different apps.

I am now much more confident when being in front of the camera as this was my main weakness. I found that practising in front of the camera and mirror really helped me become confident and happy. The choice of the song I believe is the best song we could have ever done because it's fun and very easy to lip sync and memorize the lyrics as I now know every singe word of it. As a result, I have met my targets and now I will need to be setting other targets such as to; Keep blogging! and start to think about how to answer the important evaluation questions.
